Prof. Dr. Karsten Lemmer

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Lemmer is a member of the DLR Executive Board and has been responsible for the ‘Innovation, Transfer and Scientific Infrastructures’ division since 2021. A graduate in electrical engineering, he obtained his doctorate in 1994 from the Technical University of Braunschweig. He subsequently led a wide range of national and international research, consultancy and industrial projects. In 1997, he joined Siemens AG as Head of European Projects and later as Director of New Business Development. In 2001, following a joint appointment with the Technical University of Braunschweig, he joined the DLR as the founding director of the Institute of Transport Systems, where over 200 people now carry out research. In 2017, he became a member of the DLR Executive Board responsible for Energy and Transport. 

Lemmer is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Organisation for Sustainable Mobility (NOW) and a full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He represents the Federal Republic of Germany as the national representative on the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC).

By harnessing innovations from research through effective transfer, the DLR acts as a partner to a competitive economy. With many of its more than 50 institutes and facilities, the DLR is active in all areas of hydrogen research and across the entire process chain – from production and storage to utilisation.
