Prof. Dr. Karsten Lemmer

Karsten Lemmer is a member of the DLR Executive Board responsible for the "Innovation, Transfer, and Scientific Infrastructures" division. Unlocking innovations from research, transferring know-how and technologies, and developing large-scale research facilities for excellent research results and greater technological maturity are key areas of focus for strengthening DLR as a partner to a competitive economy. A graduate in electrical engineering, he worked in university research and the railway industry before joining DLR as an institute director in 2001. Until February 2021, he served as an Executive Board member responsible for energy and transport.

Karsten Lemmer (born 1964) studied electrical engineering and then worked as a research assistant and senior lecturer at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he also earned his doctorate in 1994. He subsequently led numerous national and international research, consulting, and industrial projects. In 1997, he joined Siemens AG as Head of European Projects and later Director of New Business Development. In 2001, following a joint appointment with the Technical University of Braunschweig, he became the founding director of the Institute of Transportation Systems at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where approximately 200 researchers are currently working. In March 2017, he assumed the role of Executive Board Member for Energy and Transportation at the DLR.

He is a member of the Hydrogen Council, established in June 2020 to advise the German Federal Government on the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy, as well as a member of the advisory board of NOW GmbH – National Organisation for the Transformation of Mobility – and a full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He chairs the advisory board established in 2018 at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and represents the Federal Republic of Germany as its national representative in the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC).
