Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Sterner

Michael Sterner researches and teaches at the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences (OTH Regensburg) in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, specializing in energy storage, hydrogen and power-to-X, renewable energies, and energy economics. He heads the FENES research center for energy networks and energy storage. Previously, he held a leading position at the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (FH-IEE) in Kassel, where he was responsible for systems analysis and energy economics. He is one of the inventors of power-to-gas and co-author of the standard work "Energiespeicher" (Energy Storage), published by Springer in both German and English. In addition to numerous scientific publications, he has given over 1,200 lectures on the energy transition.
The engineer works on a voluntary basis for the VDI (Association of German Engineers), VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies), Engineers Europe, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). He heads the VDI guideline committee 4635 on Power-to-X. Since his time as a consultant at the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) from 2007 to 2010, he has advised the German Federal Government and was a member of the Diesel Commission and the European Commission's Scientific Advisory Board on Hydrogen (FCH JU). He leads various storage conferences on hydrogen and Power-to-X.
His bestseller, "How We Save the Climate," offers well-founded solutions and clear pathways to tackling the climate crisis, from renewable energies to the industrial transformation: an essential guide for proactive climate protection. The trained electrician has received several awards for his pioneering work in the fields of Power-to-X and energy storage. His expertise has been recognized through repeated inclusion in Capital magazine's list of the 40 most innovative scientists in Germany. In addition to his scientific work, he is also active as a musician and composer, involved in numerous volunteer activities, and a father of three.
