Initial conclusions from bottom-up study on decarbonisation of the heating sector

In October 2021, the German National Hydrogen Council (NWR) commissioned the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) with carrying out an analysis and assessment of different decarbonisation pathways for the heating market. Unlike well-known system studies that utilise a top-down approach, this bottom-up study examines four cities and municipalities of different sizes with varying settlement and economic structures in terms of the options available for efficient decarbonisation. The final results of the study will not be available until autumn, though initial conclusions regarding the transformation of the heating supply can already be made at this point.

Hydrogen metastudy – Analysis of energy system studies

The aim of this hydrogen metastudy is to produce a comparative analysis of the future potential demand for hydrogen and hydrogen-based synthesised products by 2050. This will be done by evaluating current system studies in the geographical region of the European Union, with a special focus on Germany. A Fraunhofer consortium consisting of the Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, the Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructure and Geothermal Energy IEG, under the coordination of the Coordinating Offices for Hydrogen, prepared the ‘Metastudie Wasserstoff – Auswertung von Energiesystemstudien‘ - only available in German.
